Method / 03 stages
Index/Approach
A method
that holds up.
Three stages applied to every engagement, so a recommendation can be traced back to the data and the assumptions it was built on.
— The method
From fragmented information to a funded decision
-
01
Discover & Assess
Establish the baseline and validate it.
-
02
Develop & Analyze
Structure the alternatives and test them.
-
03
Recommend & Deliver
Recommend, fund and monitor.
01 Discover & Assess
Establish the baseline
We start by agreeing objectives, constraints and priorities with your team, then collect and validate the asset, financial and operational data the analysis will rest on. Validation is a distinct step, not an assumption.
- What happens
- Objectives and constraints defined; asset, financial and operational data collected, reconciled and validated.
- What you receive
- A validated baseline — inventory, condition and financial position — that every later figure can be traced back to.
- Why it matters
- Analysis inherits the quality of its inputs. Unvalidated data produces confident answers to the wrong question.
Inputs→Output
- Objectives
- Constraints
- Asset inventory
- Condition
- Financial data
- Operational data
- Validated baseline
02 Develop & Analyze
Structure the alternatives
We identify the realistic alternatives — including alternative forms of financing and alternative forms of ownership — and evaluate each for cost, benefit, risk and opportunity across a common horizon.
- What happens
- Options structured and modelled on a single set of assumptions; costs, benefits, risks and opportunities quantified and sensitivity tested.
- What you receive
- A like-for-like comparison of the alternatives, with the assumptions and the risk exposure stated alongside each one.
- Why it matters
- Alternatives are only comparable when they are built on the same basis, over the same horizon.
Inputs→Output
- Scenarios
- Financing
- Ownership
- Lifecycle cost
- Risk
- Sensitivity
- Comparable options
03 Recommend & Deliver
Recommend, fund and monitor
We prioritize the options, document the reasoning and set out a recommendation — then support the work that follows: implementation, funding management and performance monitoring against what was approved.
- What happens
- Options prioritized; recommendation documented with its supporting analysis; implementation and funding requests supported through delivery.
- What you receive
- A recommendation in a form that supports funding approval, and a record that remains answerable when the decision is reviewed later.
- Why it matters
- Capital decisions are revisited years after they are made. The reasoning has to still be available.
Inputs→Output
- Prioritization
- Recommendation
- Implementation
- Funding management
- Monitoring
- Defensible decision
